Golf makes its Olympic comeback, rugby sevens comes to a close and Phelps swims for a medley medal
Following victory in the team event, the country's perfect record in women's Olympic archery is not expected to lose any of its lustre at Rio 2016 with Ki Bobae, reigning Olympic and world champion, leading the way. Team-mate Choi Misun will be a rival, however and Tan Ya-Ting of Chinese Taipei will also be in medal contention, as will India's Deepika Kumari.

China faces stiff competition if it is to repeat its London 2012 clean sweep of all five badminton gold medals at Rio 2016. Chief amongst the threats they face are no.1 seed Lee Chong Wei of Malaysia in the men’s individual, looking to unseat two-time Olympic champion Lin Dan, and Spanish world and European champion Carolina Marin in the women's singles. Men’s, women’s and mixed doubles will also get underway.

Great Britain are considered favourites in the cycling event, with a fine pedigree and some of the world's biggest stars to their name. “Anything less than a gold will be a huge disappointment, the way we’re going at the moment,” said Team GB’s Bradley Wiggins.

Three-time world champion Simone Biles is expected to dominate the women's individual all-around final given her performances so far at Rio 2016, though Aliya Mustafina of Russia and team-mate Alexandra Raisman could provide competition, and Brazil's Rebeca Andrade will have the home crowd's support.

The first Olympic rugby sevens competition draws to a close today, with an appropriately global slate of semi-finalists – Fiji will meet Japan, while Great Britain take on South Africa. The South Africans may have been beaten by Australia in one of the sides' two meetings on Wednesday, but are favourites nonetheless.

The Rio 2016 men’s table tennis title will go to one of four men, two of whom are Chinese. It is even possible that the final will be an all-Chinese affair, as the country’s Ma Long faces Japan’s Jun Mitzutani on one side of the draw, while compatriot Jike Zhang will take on Vladimir Samsonov of Belarus.

Four finals will feature on Thursday: the men's 200m backstroke and 200m individual medley, while the women will contest the 100m freestyle and 200m breaststroke. Michael Phelps will look to add to his medal haul in the medley.

Golf returns to the Olympic Games after 112 years, and Brazilian Adilson da Silva will be the first to tee off at 7:30 am. Spaniard Sergio Garcia has been tipped by many to top the podium in the men's competition, with Henrik Stenson among several other contenders who could feature.

Though the competition was postponed on Wednesday (10 August) due to adverse conditions, Great Britain’s Katherine Grainger will be going for her fifth Olympic medal, weather permitting, together with partner Vicky Thornley in the final of the double sculls.
